Groundbreaking ceremony of Nam Tha 1 Hydropower Station


    In the morning of Dec 28th, the Ground breaking Ceremony of Nam Tha 1 Hydropower Station is held at Houayxay, Bokeo Province of Laos. More than 150 Lao government leaders of all levels attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony, including Mr.Somsavat Lengsavad, the Deputy Prime Minister of Laos, Mr.Guan Hua Bing, the Chinese Ambassador to Laos, Mr. Zhao Jianguo, the chairman of China Southern Power Grid Company, the Governor of Bokeo Province, the Governor of Luang Namtha Province, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and Mr. Sisavath Thiravong, the general manager of Electricite  Du  Laos (EDL). Mr.Somsavat. Lengsavad, Mr. Zhao Jianguo and Mr. Sisavath Thiravong cut the ribbon for the project at the Groundbreaking Ceremony after addressing their speech respectively, which marks a formal entry into the construction phase, and the project is about to open a new chapter for the cooperation related to energy between China and Laos.

At the ceremony, Mr Zhao Jianguo expressed great gratitude towards Lao government, Chinese Embassy in Laos and EDL for their consistent support and help, and committed to introduce advanced management skills, control the project safety, quality and progress at the same time, complete the project according to the contract requirements, ensure the project enter into COD on schedule and make the project well-organized and high-quality, to further promote the construction of power infrastructure  in Laos and make greater contribution to the development of  Lao economic and social development.

Deputy Prime Minister Mr.Somsavat Lengsavad said that the successful development of the Nam Tha 1 hydropower station is another important achievement of the cooperation related to energy between China and Laos, and an important manifestation of strengthened economic cooperation between the two countries. The implementation of the project will not only promote local economic and social development, but also greatly improve the living standards of the people in old revolutionary base areas. Lao government will continue to support the project, meanwhile, looking forward to further communication and collaboration between China Southern Power Grid Company and EDL on power grid interconnection, and electricity trade and investment.

During his visit to Laos, Mr Zhao Jianguo held talks and meetings with Mr.Somsavat Lengsavad, Deputy Prime Minister of Laos, Ambassador Mr.Guan Hua Bing, and Mr. Sisavath Thiravong, general manager of EDL respectively, and came to consensus with them on the topic of power grid interconnection and Power Business Summit mechanism of neighboring countries. Mr Zhao Jianguo also went to the Lao office of China Southern Power Grid International co., Ltd to unveil the nameplate of Nam Tha 1 Lao Power Company Limited.

The Nam Tha 1 hydropower station is located in northern of Laos at Bokeo Province with a total installed capacity of 168MW composed of 3 units of 56,000 kilowatts hydro-generators, whose annual total amount of generation is 720 million kwh. The project is in BOT form jointly invested by China Southern Power Grid International co., Ltd and EDL according to the share ratio of 80%:20%.  The total investment of the project is $400 million. The construction project will be completed at 2018, and the operation period of the project is 28 years. The success of this project will play an important and positive role in promoting the economic and social development of northern Laos.

 Mr Wang Jiuling, the deputy general manager of China Southern Power Grid Company, head of General Office, department of Planning and department of International Business attended the Groundbreaking Ceremony.
